    Pendulum and elevator question

Homework Statement A pendulum of length L is suspended from the ceiling of an elevator. When the elevator is at rest the period of the pendulum is T. How does the period of the pendulum change when the elevator moves upward with constant acceleration? Explain. Homework Equations T=2pi...

Solving Spring Oscillations Homework: Stretched Distance d

Homework Statement When a mass of 0.35 kg is attached to a vertical spring and lowered slowly, the spring stretches a distance of d. The mass is now displaced from its equilibrium position and undergoes 100 oscillations in 48.9 seconds. WHat is the stretched distance d? Homework Equations...

thanks guys, i get it :]

    Centripetal force and friction

sorry to be slow but can you explain why its weight is equal to the friction force, and why the centripetal must equal to its normal force?

    Centripetal force and friction

yeah that's what i thought? except why did the question mention friction if we didn't need it?

Centripetal force of a car on a curve

    i got: x-component: Nsin25 + mu(N)(cos25) = (mv^2)/r y-component: Nsin25 - mg - mu(N)(sin25) = 0 i'm not sure how to find N from that since, there's like 2 N's in each equation? and i can't seem to just factor it out...or did i just get the equation wrong entirely?

Centripetal force of a car on a curve

cool, thanks it makes more sense now.. except how come the friction force is up there? usually my teacher draws it on the other side of the car, like on the same side as the centripetal force. does it matter? since its negative now instead of positive and etc?

    Centripetal force and friction

i still don't get what the equation should be. at a certain point i thought it was w=centripetal force but where does the friction come into play? or.. is friction = centripetal?

Centripetal force of a car on a curve

Homework Statement A 600 kg car is going over a curve with radius 120m that is banked at angle of 25 degrees with speed of 30 m/s. The coefficient of static friction between car and road is 0.3. What is the normal force?Homework Equations F(centripetal)= (mv^2)/r F(static) = Mu(normal force)The...

    Centripetal force and friction

Homework Statement In a carnival ride, passengers stand with their backs against the wall of a cylinder. The cylinder is set into rotation and the floor is lowered away from the passengers, but they remain stuck against the wall of the cylinder. For a cylinder with 2m radius, what is the...
