Undergrad What causes variations in redshift measurements?
Hello! I have a small question, in my textbook and everywhere I look online it states that to find the redshift of a receding galaxy from the spectrograph you divide the change in wavelength by the original point you are measuring from. The problem I have is, if there is a 20nm shift for...- Walternate

Graduate Calculating radiation dose from flux
Thank you Bob :) I can see I was way off with what I was trying to do then. I'm not sure where I got cm3 for flux either, I should have spotted that really! I imagine flux is measured through a 2 dimensional plane? I will have a read of what you posted for me so thank you! But I think I am a...- Walternate

Graduate Calculating radiation dose from flux
Hi! Hopefully I'm not being too stupid, but I'm trying to work out the radiation dose received at a particular point in space being subjected to a high rate of proton flux. I think.. that I am right in working it out this way so far, for instance if the flux rate of Protons >100Mev is 10^7 cm3...- Walternate

Graduate Fine structure constant increase with energy?
Thanks both of you :) Yes I think I understand know, what threw me was that this is a Level one book and it put this in there without any warning and not even a statement like 'while this may seem to make no sense it does, but we will not be exploring why in this course' which it has done for...- Walternate

Graduate Fine structure constant increase with energy?
Hi! Hope someone can help, I am currently studying an Open University course and I am a little confused by a statement in one of the textbooks. It says that the value of the fine structure constant increases with collision energy (in Electron/Positron annihilation). I am probably being...- Walternate
