In summary, the Ministry of Defence has released eight secret files on UFO sightings from the period of 1978 to 1987, which can be downloaded from the National Archives website. These files include reports of strange lights and unexplained objects seen by the public, armed forces, and police officers. This is part of a larger plan to release almost 200 files over the next four years, with the first month of release being free for download. Some of the accounts in the files may seem fabricated, such as the report of a round glowing craft landing on an airway and quickly taking off, which raises questions about the security of runways.

I saw that earlier. The "round glowing craft" that supposedly landed on an airway before immediately taking off was unusual. I thought they had security cameras covering runways, no?

I find this release of previously classified UFO files by the Ministry of Defence to be a significant development. It provides an opportunity for further research and analysis of reported sightings and encounters, potentially shedding light on the nature of these phenomena. While some of the accounts may seem far-fetched, it is important to approach them with an open mind and utilize scientific methods to examine the evidence presented.

I am also pleased to see that these files will be available for free download for the first month, allowing for wider access and potential collaboration among researchers. It will be interesting to see how these files contribute to the ongoing discussion and investigation of UFOs and their possible origins. I encourage individuals to review the files and contribute to the scientific discourse surrounding this topic.

1. What exactly are the UK UFO files available from the national archives?

The UK UFO files available from the national archives are a collection of declassified documents that were previously held by the UK government's Ministry of Defence (MoD). These files contain reports, investigations, and correspondence related to sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) in UK airspace.

2. How many files are included in the UK UFO files collection?

There are over 60,000 files included in the UK UFO files collection, which cover a time period of over 50 years from 1950 to 2009. However, not all of these files are related to UFO sightings, as some also contain administrative and policy documents.

3. Are the UK UFO files available to the public?

Yes, the UK UFO files are available to the public. In 2008, the MoD made the decision to release all of the files to the National Archives, where they can be accessed by anyone with a valid research card. The files are also available online through the National Archives website.

4. What kind of information can be found in the UK UFO files?

The UK UFO files contain a wide range of information, including witness reports, official investigations, photographs, and sketches of reported UFO sightings. They also contain correspondence between the MoD and other government agencies, as well as details of how the MoD handled and responded to UFO reports.

5. Why were the UK UFO files released to the public?

The MoD released the UK UFO files to the public in order to increase transparency and to address public interest in the topic. This decision was also influenced by the Freedom of Information Act, which requires government agencies to release certain documents to the public upon request.
