SUMMARY

Jack, weighing 653 N, swings from a 26 m vine and descends 3.2 m. The vine will not break, as the maximum force exerted on it during the swing is 644 N, which is below the breaking threshold of 950 N. If the vine were to break, it would do so at an angle of approximately 10.8 degrees, calculated using the inverse sine function based on the forces involved.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of forces and tension in physics
  • Knowledge of free body diagrams
  • Familiarity with trigonometric functions, specifically inverse sine
  • Basic principles of pendulum motion
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the principles of tension in ropes and cables
  • Learn how to draw and analyze free body diagrams
  • Explore pendulum motion dynamics and energy conservation
  • Investigate the effects of weight and angle on tension in swinging objects
USEFUL FOR

Physics students, educators, and anyone interested in understanding the mechanics of swinging objects and forces involved in tension scenarios.

Jack, who weighs 653 N, swings from a cliff at the end of a convenient vine that is 26 m long. From the top of the cliff to the bottom of the swing, he descends by 3.2 m. The vine will break if the force on it exceeds 950 N.

(a) Does the vine break? yes / no
(b) What is the greatest force on the vine during the swing? ____Newtons
(c) At what angle does it break, if it breaks?

vtech, please show us your work before asking for help. We can only help you understand things not solve them for you. :frown:

Anyway you should draw a freebody diagram for the situation. Figure out the point at which the tension in the rope is maximum. That will give you the solution to all three parts.

Cheers
Vivek

(a) No, the vine does not break.
(b) The greatest force on the vine during the swing is 644 N.
(c) The vine does not break, but if it did, it would break at an angle of approximately 10.8 degrees (calculated by taking the inverse sine of 950 N/653 N).
