AI Thread Summary
To determine which professors at a university are likely to hire new graduate students, it's essential to directly contact faculty members whose research aligns with your interests, particularly in theory. The faculty directory may not provide sufficient insights, so reaching out via email to inquire about potential openings and research opportunities is crucial. Additionally, reviewing recent publications, attending departmental seminars, and engaging with current graduate students can offer valuable information about faculty hiring trends and research availability. Tailoring your applications based on specific research opportunities will enhance your chances of finding a suitable program.

How do I determine which professors at a given university tend to or are willing to hire new grad students? So far the faculty directory isn't much help. Which schools I apply to this fall will depend on the specific research opportunities available. If it makes a difference, I'm interested in theory. Thanks for the tips in advance!

I'm going to make this one quick since I have little time. Background: Throughout my life I have always done good in Math. I almost always received 90%+, and received easily upwards of 95% when I took normal-level HS Math courses. When I took Grade 9 "De-Streamed" Math (All students must take "De-Streamed" in Canada), I initially had 98% until I got very sick and my mark had dropped to 95%. The Physics teachers and Math teachers talked about me as if I were some sort of genius. Then, an...
