Absorbtion and emissions - Carbon dioxide

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the role of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in anthropogenic global warming (AGW), particularly in comparison to water vapor's contribution as a greenhouse gas. Participants explore the implications of CO2's absorption characteristics and its relative influence on climate change.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants assert that CO2 emissions are primarily responsible for AGW, while others highlight that water vapor constitutes over 90% of greenhouse gases and absorbs similar wavelengths.
  • A participant notes that the question of CO2's influence is complex and has been previously discussed in another thread, suggesting that it may provoke strong reactions.
  • There is a request for specific references to the earlier discussion on this topic in the Earth Sciences thread, indicating a desire for further exploration of the arguments presented.
  • One participant expresses a light-hearted comment about not being allergic to hornet stings, possibly reflecting the contentious nature of the topic.
  • Another participant provides a link to a previous discussion, indicating that the topic has been addressed in detail elsewhere.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not appear to reach a consensus, as there are competing views regarding the significance of CO2 versus water vapor in climate dynamics. The discussion remains unresolved with multiple perspectives presented.

Contextual Notes

The discussion may be limited by assumptions regarding the definitions of greenhouse gases and their respective roles in climate change, as well as the complexity of the interactions between different gases.

I hear many who believe that AGW is caused primarily by CO2 emissions in the atmosphere.
I also hear from others that water vapor covers the same wave length in absorption. With more than 90% of the greenhouse gases being water vapor, what is the basis for the case concerning the influence of CO2.

That is the $64,000 question. It has been discussed in the Earth Sciences thread. Be warned that this question is like throwing a grenade into a room full hornets nests.

Thank You Chemistry
Do you know which thread In Earth Science dealt with this? If you would, what is your opinion on this question?

PS I am not alergic to honet stings.

You should PM Andre about that...
