Acceleration of magnetic fluids

Click For Summary
Using a linear accelerator to fire a magnetic fluid is questioned due to the weak paramagnetic properties of liquid oxygen, making it difficult to maintain its liquid state while accelerating. The discussion suggests that ionizing the fluid and employing an electric field for acceleration may be a more feasible approach. The concept of combining a coil gun with liquid oxygen for rocket propulsion is explored, but practical challenges are highlighted. Overall, the feasibility of using magnetic fluids in this manner remains uncertain. The conversation emphasizes the need for innovative methods to achieve effective propulsion.

Is it possible to use a linear accelerator to fire a magnetic fluid.

I have this idea for a science fiction story that uses a coil gun and liquid oxygen for rocket propulsion.

Is this feasible?

As always thank you for your input.

no takers?

While it's true that liquid oxygen is paramagnetic, this is a pretty weak effect, and it's not clear how you would accelerate it and at the same time keep it a liquid. Heckuva lot easier, in my opinion, to just ionize the stuff and use an electric field to accelerate it.
