In summary, the space station and space shuttle are close together, and the shuttle is closer to the tracking stations than the space station is.

Altitude Question...

Based upon the information provided on International Space Station (I.S.S.) and Space Shuttle (S.S.), and tracking stations C and D, answer following questions:
a) What are the altitudes of the space station and space shuttle?
b) How far apart are they? (horizontal distance)
c) How far is each space vehicle from each of the tracking stations?

I have attached a diagram below...

...and I have attached my answers as well in the next reply to this post...can someone please look them over...i've showed all my steps...

thanks

i can't attach my work...as the file is too big so I will just type my answers...

a)
altitude of space station 759.4km

altitude of space shuttle 777.135km

b)
hoizontal distance= 120km

c)

space station from tracking station C 1395.98km
space station from tracking station D 799.48km
space shuttle from tracking station C 1509km
space shuttle from tracking station D 787.37km

The diagram is not up yet... it needs to be authorized by the admins.
You may want to upload it to Imageshack.us - it's a free image upload thing...

im sure he's rushing to it right now...
and posting your work isn't really helpful since we don't know what the problem looks like.

All are pretty close (accounting for rounding) .

Edit: b is correct, too.

I take it you used the law of sines ... many times?

  • #10
yup...why is there something wrong with using the sine law

1. What is the purpose of tracking stations C & D?

The purpose of tracking stations C & D is to track and communicate with the International Space Station (ISS) and Space Shuttle (SS) as they orbit the Earth. These tracking stations are strategically located around the world to ensure continuous contact with the spacecraft.

2. How do tracking stations C & D communicate with the ISS and SS?

Tracking stations C & D use a combination of radio and satellite communications to send and receive signals from the ISS and SS. They have large antennas that can transmit and receive signals over long distances.

3. What type of data is collected by tracking stations C & D?

Tracking stations C & D collect a variety of data from the ISS and SS, including telemetry data (such as altitude, speed, and position), crew biometric data, and scientific data from experiments being conducted on board the spacecraft.

4. How does the ISS maintain its altitude?

The ISS maintains its altitude through a combination of thrusters and gyroscopes. The thrusters are used to make small adjustments to the ISS's trajectory, while the gyroscopes help to keep the ISS stable and oriented in the correct direction.

5. How accurate are the altitude measurements from tracking stations C & D?

The altitude measurements from tracking stations C & D are extremely accurate, with a margin of error of only a few meters. This level of precision is necessary to ensure the safety and stability of the ISS and SS as they orbit the Earth.
