I have applied to SULI the past two summers and have been declined. I believe I am a strong candidate; I have a 3.81 gpa, have done chemistry research in a materials science and computational chem lab, and been published twice as an undergrad. The two labs I applied for are NREL and Argonne for PV or battery research. I am not sure where I am going wrong. There is another application coming up May 30th. Any tips would help!

A. Maybe you didn't do anything wrong.

B. There is no way anyone can assess your application from a description that is 1% the length of the packet.

1. What is SULI and how does it relate to my 3.81 GPA?

SULI stands for the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship program, which is sponsored by the Department of Energy. This program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to conduct research at a national laboratory and gain hands-on experience in their field of study. Your 3.81 GPA is important because it shows your academic achievements and potential for success in the program.

2. What are some tips for a successful application to SULI?

Some tips for success with your SULI application include researching the program and the national laboratory you are interested in, writing a strong personal statement, obtaining strong letters of recommendation, and highlighting any relevant coursework, research experience, or extracurricular activities. It is also important to submit your application early and ensure that all materials are complete and accurate.

3. Can I apply for SULI if I am not a science major?

Yes, SULI is open to students in a variety of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. This includes majors such as biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, and engineering, among others. It is important to review the specific eligibility requirements for the laboratory you are interested in to determine if your major is eligible.

4. Is there a minimum GPA requirement for SULI?

While each laboratory may have their own specific requirements, most SULI programs prefer applicants with a minimum GPA of 3.0. However, having a GPA of 3.81 or higher will make you a more competitive applicant and increase your chances of being selected for the program.

5. What can I expect if I am selected for SULI?

If you are selected for SULI, you can expect to spend 10 weeks during the summer conducting research at a national laboratory. You will work closely with a mentor and other researchers in your field, gaining hands-on experience and developing valuable skills. You may also have the opportunity to present your research findings at a conference or publish your work in a scientific journal.
