AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the desire to block direct messages (PMs) from a specific user without adding them to the ignore list. The original poster finds the frequency of unwanted PMs annoying but still values the user's contributions to the forum. They seek a solution that allows selective blocking of PMs while still engaging with the user's public posts. Current options only allow for complete ignoring of a member, which is seen as too extreme for the situation. The conversation highlights a common issue of managing unwanted communication in online forums.

Is there a way to block a specific user's PMs from being delivered to my inbox without resorting to adding them to my ignore list? I don't want to block all PMs and have no reason to ignore this person's posts on the board, just am getting tired of deleting PMs I don't care to receive or respond to from someone not getting the point that their correspondence is unwelcome (nothing offensive, just getting annoying due to over-abundance). Simply blocking the PMs from that sender would solve the problem easily enough.

(And, tribdog, it's not you either...)

Hopefully a more strongly worded reply to the last PM has solved the problem (or perhaps the particular member in question will see this post and have all doubt removed from their mind). I asked here because others may have periodically encountered members who were overzealous with PMs and it would be useful to be able to selectively block PMs without ignoring posts on the board. Right now, I'm only aware of the ability to ignore EVERYTHING from a given member, which is more drastic than the situation warrants.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
