AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the maximum number of knights that can be placed on a chessboard without threatening each other. The initial claim suggests that 48 knights can be positioned if they cannot attack pieces of the same color. However, it is clarified that the assumption is broader, encompassing all attacks and defenses, leading to the conclusion that a maximum of 32 knights can be placed by completely covering one color of the board. The conversation draws a parallel to the eight queens problem, noting its complexity relative to the knight placement challenge. The tone remains light-hearted, with participants acknowledging the simplicity of the knight problem compared to more complex chess puzzles.

What is the greatest number of knights that can be placed on a chessboard such that no two pieces are in a position to attack each other? Please provide your solution.

48 if you asssume that pieces can not attack those of the same color.

I have a feeling you're not assuming that though.

edit - wait, I think I have a better way.

Hmm, you might mean it the way I stated after all.

2nd edit. No, I was a fool. If that were the case you could put 64!

Wow, that was a fast response! But no, I meant attack or defend. This is analogous to the eight queens problem.

32, cover one color completely.

Except that it's the toddler version, for creators with brain spasms.

Next time I'll let Njorl come up with the chess problems.

Every day we learn new things. Sometimes it's just a small fact or realization. No matter how trivial or random, let's start recording our daily lessons. Please start off with "Today I learned". Keep commentary to a minimum and just LIKE posts. I'll start! Today I learned that you clean up a white hat by spraying some cleaner with bleach on it (rinse before putting it back on your head!)
