Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the construction of a projectile launcher specifically designed to launch a ping pong ball. Participants explore various methods of propulsion, including catapults, rubber band launchers, and spring mechanisms, while considering factors such as accuracy and assembly techniques.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest building a rubber band launcher, while others propose a catapult or a spring mechanism as alternatives.
  • One participant mentions the use of table tennis practice machines that utilize wheels driven by motors to generate spin and control the trajectory of the ball.
  • A hybrid design combining rubber bands and a catapult mechanism is proposed, utilizing PVC materials to enhance propulsion.
  • Another participant emphasizes the importance of spin for accuracy, suggesting that top or bottom spin can help maintain a straight trajectory.
  • Some participants recommend using small motors or springs for propulsion, while others humorously suggest unconventional methods like using a vacuum cleaner.
  • There is a mention of using air flow through a hose combined with a rubber band to impart spin on the ball.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a variety of ideas and methods for building the launcher, with no clear consensus on the best approach. Multiple competing views remain regarding the most effective design and propulsion method.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not provided specific details on the time frame, budget, or materials available for the project, which may influence the feasibility of the proposed designs.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be useful for students or hobbyists interested in physics projects, particularly those exploring mechanics and projectile motion.

I have a question- How exactly should I go about building a projectile launcher with a ping pong ball?

Would you recommend a catapult launcher, a rubberband launcher, or a spring launcher?

Thanks.

I Need Help Please.

I'm pretty sure that I'm building a rubber band launcher.

How would you assemble this?

Can you give us a little bit more information including:
time period
money
class you are taking, unless it is for fun
means for propulsion

You could built a nice rubber band and catapult hybrid with PVC, having the armature as-pulled-back increase tension on many rubber bands (thick, or even another material). When the arm is let go of, the elastic potential will release and catapault! WHOOO!

Thanks, its for a regular physics class, just for fun. We just need to have the ping pong fly accurately.
Great Ideas! Thank you

For accuracy, I'd recommend something along the approach that Jeff mentioned. Top or bottom spin should keep the ball going pretty much in a straight horizontal trajectory. Your elevation can be adjusted by varying the speed or the vertical angle of the launcher. Side spin would make it curve, and probably not with acceptable accuracy.

Just get a small motor out of an old computer's fan or something like that to drive the wheels. If that is too complicated you could put a spring in the bottom of a tube, put the ball in the tube, and push down on the ball, then let go.

Get a vacuum cleaner. One that blows as well as sucks:

That's the n00b way.

If you use a hose with air blowing through it, you can place a rubber band on one side of the opening to impart spin on the ping pong ball. You'd want the rubber band on the top to generate backspin.
