AI Thread Summary
A user shared their experience of suffering burns from a coffee cup that was assumed to be microwave safe. After heating coffee, they reported receiving a second-degree burn and a small third-degree burn from the cup's handle, estimating its temperature to be between 500 and 700 degrees Fahrenheit. The discussion humorously suggested the potential for a lawsuit over the incident, with playful banter about the reactions of another user, Tsunami. The original poster mentioned receiving advice to apply Neosporin to the burns, which they did not follow, leading to further lighthearted teasing about their condition and typing ability despite the injury.

Just a comment on cups. Assuming that it was microwave safe, I recently put a new coffee cup in the nuke. After heating my coffee, I grabbed the cup and received a second degree burn - about half the size of a dime - with a small third degree burn [charring] in a portion of the first! Now that's hot. Based on my experience with temp controlled soldering irons [many burns], I'd guess that cup handle was 500 - 700 degrees F.

What did Tsunami say?

If you were really smart, you could turn this into a court case that could potentially land you several million dollars.

(Actually I told him to put some neosporin on it after he cleaned it up. Did he do that, you ask? NO! Of COURSE not! So... suffer, baby, suffer!

My finger is fine. Now if I could only move my arm!

You do seem to be typing just okay because I don't see you making any typos.

For a person who just suffered from a 700 degree burn, that is quite an achievement. :approve:

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
