SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the average power exerted by a 55kg woman running up a flight of stairs with a height of 4.5m in 3.5 seconds. The correct approach involves using gravitational potential energy (GPE) rather than kinetic energy (KE). The formula for GPE is mgh, where m is mass (55kg), g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.81 m/s²), and h is the height (4.5m). The average power can then be calculated by dividing the GPE by the time taken (3.5s).

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of gravitational potential energy (GPE)
  • Basic knowledge of power calculations in physics
  • Familiarity with the formula for average power
  • Ability to perform unit conversions and calculations
NEXT STEPS
  • Learn how to calculate gravitational potential energy (GPE)
  • Study the concept of average power in physics
  • Explore examples of energy calculations in real-world scenarios
  • Review the relationship between work, energy, and power
USEFUL FOR

Students studying physics, educators teaching energy concepts, and anyone interested in understanding power calculations related to physical activities.

Hey guys, my teacher asked us:

A 55kg woman runs up a flight of stairs having a rise of 4.5m in 3.5s. What average power must she supply?

I used the kinetic energy formula:

1/2(55)((4.5/3.5)^2) = J
Watts = J/3.5

Is that the right approach? Because i can't get the answer in the back of the book :(

use gpe instead of ke, because she is going up the stairs

thanks a lot!
