SUMMARY

To calculate the optimal charging potential for a 1.0 microfarad capacitor to store 1.0 joule of energy, the formula Uc = 1/2 C V² is utilized. The correct calculation involves rearranging the formula to V = sqrt(2E/C), leading to V = sqrt(2/1E-6), which simplifies to V = sqrt(2E6). The accurate result for the voltage is approximately 1414.21 volts, not 0.004 volts as initially calculated.

Homework Statement

To what potential should you charge a 1.0 micro(u)F capacitor to store 1.0 J of energy?

Homework Equations

Uc = 1/2C (Vc)squared

The Attempt at a Solution

1/2 CV^2 so V=SQR(2E/C)=SQR(2/1E^-6)=.004 V

This isn't right though. Any help??

It seems you have taken the wrong square root...sqrt(2/1E-6) is definitely NOT .004.

2/1E-6 = 2E6 so the sqrt(2E6) is...?
