AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the strange connections and coincidences between various topics, particularly focusing on the Heaven's Gate cult, which believed in an impending Earth recycling by a mother ship, paralleling themes from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." This connection raises questions about the influence of science fiction on real-world beliefs. The conversation also touches on the show "Connections," where James Burke explores the links between unrelated innovations and scientific advancements, illustrating how seemingly trivial historical events can lead to significant developments. The mention of astronomical observations while under the influence of drugs is criticized, suggesting a lack of clarity in understanding complex topics. Overall, the thread highlights the intriguing intersections between cultural narratives and historical events.

A thread for strange connections or coincidences.

I was watching Comets on THC, and it came to my attention that the Heaven's Gate cult - all of whom committed suicide - believed that the Earth was going to be recycled by the mother ship.

Is is just me or does this smack of "intergalactic highway"?

I don't think you should be doing astronomical observations on drugs.

Alright now Zooby you should be great at this. Did you ever watch the show, Connections?

I never did, no. I think that was on during this one ten year stretch when I didn't watch television at all.

It was pretty interesting. In each show, James Burke traces the connections between seemingly unrelated innovations and scientific knowledge. For example,

... “How the popularity of underwear in the 12th century led to the invention of the printing press” or “How the arrival of the cannon led to the development of movies.” ...

Edit: For those who don't know, the "intergalactic highway" reference comes from the book "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy". The reference to recycling the Earth - the basis for a mass suicided - made me wonder as it almost sounds like something from the book.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
