Car paint blocking signal to my drone's antenna

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the potential effects of a car paint job on the radio frequency (RF) performance of a DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ drone. Participants explore the implications of paint on the drone's antenna and its flight behavior, focusing on issues of RF interference and possible mitigation strategies.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant reports erratic flying behavior in their drone following a car paint job, suggesting RF interference as a possible cause.
  • Another participant proposes weighing an unpainted drone for comparison to assess any weight-related impacts from the paint.
  • A question is raised about the conductivity of car paint, indicating a need to understand its potential effects on RF signals.
  • A suggestion is made to locate the antenna and consider mounting it externally if it is a bare wire, which may help mitigate interference issues.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants have not reached a consensus on the exact cause of the issues or the best approach to mitigate them. Multiple viewpoints and questions remain regarding the effects of the paint and the configuration of the antenna.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved questions about the conductivity of the car paint and its specific impact on RF signals, as well as the configuration of the drone's antenna.

Hello all, I have a DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ and I just recently had it painted. It is painted like a car would be painted. Ever since the new paint job, my drone is not flying right. It is displaying symptoms of Radio Frequency (RF) interference. The main issue is that it is now flying erratically when I try to fly it. My question is, how can I mitigate this issue without having to remove the paint altogether?

You might try weighing an unpainted drone (if store/dealer allows you), and compare it to your painted weight.

How much is conductive that car paint?

Where is the antenna and what does it look like? If it is a bare wire, can you mount it outside instead of inside?
