SUMMARY

The forum discussion centers on a high school physics project requiring the construction of a catapult capable of launching a tennis ball 12 meters into a trash can. Participants express confusion regarding suitable materials and design strategies to meet the project's specifications. Key factors influencing the catapult's performance include the choice of materials, the design of the launching mechanism, and the overall dimensions of the catapult. Suggestions emphasize the importance of conducting preliminary research, particularly utilizing Google and Google Images for inspiration and guidance.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics principles related to projectile motion
  • Familiarity with catapult design mechanisms
  • Knowledge of materials suitable for building a catapult, such as wood or plastic
  • Ability to conduct effective online research for project ideas and designs
NEXT STEPS
  • Research different types of catapult mechanisms, such as trebuchets and spring-loaded designs
  • Explore materials like PVC pipes and rubber bands for optimal performance
  • Learn about the physics of projectile motion to calculate launch angles and distances
  • Investigate online resources and tutorials for step-by-step catapult construction
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for high school students undertaking physics projects, educators guiding students in hands-on learning, and hobbyists interested in building simple mechanical devices.

Hi, I have to do a high school project in physics regarding to build a catapult. The catapult must launch a tennis ball 12 meters from the launch line into the trash can. My friends and I are confused on what materials to use in this project and how to exactly make it so it can fit the requirements of this project  ? What exactly is the most important factor in this project to let this catapult launch 12 meters away? Can you help me?

What is the project problem statement exactly? What lattitude do you have in chosing the mechanism? How big can your launcher be? (If it can be 12m long, the problem gets easier...)

What research have you done so far? As Gad suggests, Google is your friend. And as a hint, Google Images is an even bigger friend early in a project like this.
