Chemical reaction that can be used for baby gender reveal

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the feasibility of using specific chemical indicators, phenolphthalein and bromothymol blue, for a baby gender reveal. Participants explore the potential color changes that could indicate gender based on pH levels, focusing on the theoretical and practical aspects of the chemical reactions involved.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant proposes combining phenolphthalein and bromothymol blue for a gender reveal, questioning if it would work.
  • Another participant explains that the proposed combination will not yield the desired color change, detailing the color outcomes of each indicator in acidic and alkaline conditions.
  • A third participant expresses confusion about the connection between pH levels and baby gender, seeking clarification.
  • A fourth participant suggests that the intent is to create a visual effect (pink or blue) rather than a scientific test for gender.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the effectiveness of the proposed chemical combination, and there are varying interpretations of the relationship between pH and gender reveal methods.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not clarify the assumptions behind the proposed chemical reactions or the specific conditions under which the indicators would be used. There is also a lack of detailed exploration into alternative indicators suggested.

Hi.

Basically, the title. I've been thinking about combining phenolphthalein and bromothymol for this purpose.

Will this work? Thoughts?

I assume you're looking for a blue/pink change between acid and alkali or vice versa. Your combination won't work; phenolphthalein is colourless in acid and pink in alkali, while bromothymol blue is yellow in acid and blue in alkali, so the combination will be yellow in acid and purple in alkali.

Thymol Blue or Congo Red might give you the change you want.

Never heard about connection between baby gender and pH, what am I missing?

Presumably some way of turning something pink or blue to inform people of the baby's gender. Not a test for gender.
