Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the concept of time travel, particularly the implications of moving backward in time, as well as the associated paradoxes such as the Grandfather paradox. Participants explore theoretical ideas related to wormholes and the nature of time itself.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses confusion about the implications of time travel, questioning what it means to "move to a different time" and the consequences of actions taken in the past.
  • Another participant suggests that time travel, except for moving forward, is a dubious concept and should not be taken too seriously, noting its popularity in science fiction.
  • A different participant asserts that reverse time travel is not possible and dismisses speculation on the topic as fictional.
  • One participant proposes that time is merely a mathematical construct used to understand system dynamics, implying a more abstract view of time.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants exhibit disagreement regarding the feasibility and seriousness of time travel, with some dismissing it as fiction while others engage with the concept more openly.

Contextual Notes

There are varying assumptions about the nature of time and time travel, with some participants treating it as a theoretical discussion while others view it as purely fictional. The discussion does not resolve these differing perspectives.

I was reading about worm holes and stuff like that, and I don’t get it. What dose going back in time really mean? If it just changes the time, how dose that all of the sudden give you the power to... kill your grandfather and create the Grandfather paradox, or walk around in the past... It wouldn’t be all that fantastic really; you couldn’t even tell that you went back in time. So I’m just a bit confused as to what happens in a “you move to a different time” scenario, like a wormhole :(sorry about spelling)
I hop this is the right place to post this?

Time travel ( except in the forward direction) is a dubious idea so one shouldn't take it too seriously. It does provide lots of good storylines for SF writers, though.

It's just plain, old, not possible and not true. There is no use speculating over how "reverse time travel" works because such a thing is fiction.

time is a mathematical invention to understand the dynamics of a system..nothing more.
