AI Thread Summary
The recent change on the main page has replaced Science American news tidbits with links to Physics Today articles, which are mostly behind paywalls. Users express disappointment over the limited access to Physics Today content, as many articles require a subscription to read. The switch was made due to issues with SciAm's RSS feed affecting formatting. Some users have suggested alternatives, like switching to Science Daily for better access to quality news. Overall, the community is seeking a more accessible news source that maintains the quality of content previously provided by SciAm.

Does anybody else miss the choice SciAm news tidbits on upper right?

In there place we now have links to Physics Today articles. However these are mostly restricted access or pay-per-view, so one cannot read most of what is offered unless one is a subscriber.

Perhaps this change to the main page was discussed elsewhere and has reasons I don't know about. Anybody have a link to some conversation about it?

Marcus I will change up the RSS again, I didn't realize they were pay-per-view. I switched out SciAm because they seem to have tweaked their RSS feed and it's messing with PF's formatting.

I'm sorry to cause trouble (and hope the contact with SciAm does not continue to mess us up!)
just to make sure, I tested and found 6 of the 8 Physics Today links were subscriber only,
so if that is typical of them it does not seem like a good deal.

I've been appreciating the newslinks in the upper right and hope you find a workable solution.

changed to science daily news feed, they seem to be good quality and interesting, thanks!

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
