SUMMARY

George is designing a flashlight that utilizes a new LED reflector, which produces a focused spot of light but requires a lens to create a flood effect around the edges. He seeks recommendations for tools to design this lens, specifically mentioning the need for a lens approximately 2 inches in diameter. Users suggest software options such as TracePro and LightTools for lens design, emphasizing their effectiveness in optical simulations.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of LED reflector technology
  • Familiarity with optical design software
  • Basic knowledge of lens properties and functions
  • Experience in product design and prototyping
NEXT STEPS
  • Research TracePro for optical simulation and lens design
  • Explore LightTools for advanced lighting analysis
  • Investigate materials suitable for 2-inch diameter lenses
  • Learn about the principles of light dispersion and flood lighting
USEFUL FOR

Product designers, optical engineers, and hobbyists interested in flashlight design and LED technology.

I'm designing a flashlight using a new LED reflector. It creates a good spot, but I want it to flood on the edges. See image below. My thought was to create a lens and put it in front of the LED reflector to disperse the light around the edges. Can anyone point me to some simple tools that will help me design the lens?

Thanks George. Where can I get cheap lens?

I'm in Atlanta. The lens needs to be about 2" in dia.
