Homework Statement



A 0.15 kg baseball is pitched with a speed of 23 m/s. When the ball hits the catcher's glove the glove moves back by 0.044 m as it stops the ball. Assuming a constant acceleration of the ball, what was the average force applied by the catcher's glove?

p = mv
impulse = change in momentum = Ft
final velocity squared = initial vel squared + 2*a*d
F=m

The Attempt at a Solution


I found the momentum and impulse via p=mv or -3.45 kg-m/s which is correct per submission.
To find average force, I first found average acceleration by using velocity equation above:
0 squared = 23 squared + 2*a*.044 m
a = -6011 m/s squared
Then I substituted a and m into F = ma or F = .15 * (-6011) = -901.7 kN THis was marked wrong! Help! I need help asap!

Never mind...the F is in N not kN and thus converted should be -.9017 kN
