Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the compatibility and usability of digital pens with the Lenovo Ideapad S510p running Ubuntu 14.04. Participants explore various models, software compatibility, and alternative methods for writing equations digitally.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about digital pen models that work with Linux and expresses a preference for inexpensive options without high sensitivity features.
  • Another participant suggests that finding compatible software for Linux may be necessary for the digital pen to function properly.
  • There is a discussion about the need for a Linux driver for the digital pen, with uncertainty about its availability.
  • Several participants mention apps available on iOS that convert handwritten equations into digital format, but these are deemed unsuitable for the original poster who uses a laptop.
  • One participant proposes preparing equations as images to use during presentations as an alternative to writing them in real-time.
  • A suggestion is made to consider a digital pen from Digital Field Solutions based on personal experience.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express uncertainty regarding the availability of compatible digital pens for Linux and whether specific software or drivers are necessary. There is no consensus on the best approach or solution for the original poster's needs.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention limitations related to the lack of iOS devices for certain apps and the challenges of using LaTeX for writing equations quickly during presentations.

Who May Find This Useful

Users of Lenovo Ideapad S510p with Ubuntu 14.04 interested in digital pen options for equation writing, as well as those seeking alternative methods for digital note-taking or presentations.

My laptop is Lenovo ideapad S510p(no touch-screen!) and my OS is Ubuntu 14.04. I want to buy a digital pen but there are things that make me doubt it.
1)Can I find models that have no problem with linux? Which models?
2)I want to buy something cheap because I don't need high sensitivities or any other special feature. So I was thinking can I buy only a pen and write on any smooth surface and don't buy anything special for that?
I'll appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks

Perhaps if you can find some software that works with one and runs on linux then youll be able to find a pen that works with it.

Digital pen! ha! For like drawing or just notes?

I've seen that page before but there were also other pages suggesting that there are models that work with linux but those were not enough.
And about your last sentence, I think I need a driver developed for linux regardless of having a software for the pen or not. But I'm not sure. Anyway even if this is possible, I have no idea how!

I just want to be able to write some equations in my computer faster than latex coding allows.

I searched around for that too and found an app on the iPad that took handdrawn scratches and generated the equation. It was pretty good except it couldn't recognize or had no knowledge of some of the more arcane math symbols like partial derivative. However what it could do was very impressive.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/myscript-mathpad-handwriting/id674996719?mt=8

and this one looks good not pen but keyboard:

and you might find something here too:

and lastly this one although I don't know how it is now:

I really appreciate it that you devoted your time for finding these. But actually they're not applicable for me. I want something for my laptop and also I don't have anything running iOS!
Actually I was thinking about making some physics video courses for uploading in a website. And I realized its better to write equations in an application resembling a white\black board and capture the screen with recorded explanations. But It seemed to me that if I want to write equations by latex coding, it'll be slow and will fall behind my explanations. So I thought a digital pen would be good.

You should buy a digital pen at Digital Field Solutions. I have nice experience with DFS..
