Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around determining the period and speed of a regular bus service between two towns, A and B, based on observations made by a cyclist. The problem involves concepts of relative velocity and potentially wave motion.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • A cyclist traveling at 20 km/h observes a bus passing every 18 minutes in the direction of his motion and every 6 minutes in the opposite direction.
  • Some participants suggest that the concept of relative velocity will be essential for forming the equations needed to solve the problem.
  • One participant proposes that the situation may relate to wave motion and the Doppler effect.
  • A later reply claims to have found the solution, stating the period of the bus service is 9 minutes and the velocity of the bus is 40 km/h.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion includes a claim of a solution, but it is unclear if all participants agree with this conclusion or if alternative interpretations remain unaddressed.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty about forming the equations necessary for the solution, indicating potential missing assumptions or unresolved steps in the reasoning process.

Two towns A and B are connected
by a regular bus service with a bus
leaving in either direction every T
minutes. A man cycling with a
speed of 20 km h –1 in the
direction A to B notices that a bus
goes past him every 18 min in the
direction of his motion, and every
6 min in the opposite direction.
What is the period T of the bus
service and with what speed
(assumed constant) do the buses
ply on the road?

Looks good - what have you tried?
Is this homework?

No not homework. I know concept of relative velocity will be used to solve this problem but I am having trouble in forming the equations.

It's actually wave motion - doppler effect.

Aah..got the answer.
time period of bus service= 9 min.
Velocity of bus = 40 km/hr

And thanks for responding.

Well done :)
