I've seen a documentary about the Yukon Route Railroad. Some trains are run by old steam engines (with Diesel). They also equipped their engines with eddy current brakes and said, that the resulting current is conducted into resistors and via thermal energy removed into air.
I assume that modern electrical trains use their power supply to regain the currents, which isn't possible here for the lack of such. But why don't they simply use the rails instead?
