Effect of Collimated lens on Gauss Beam

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the effects of a collimated lens on the propagation of a Gaussian beam, specifically focusing on how the lens influences the beam waist and intensity. Participants are seeking equations and computational methods for analysis, particularly using MATLAB.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested, Mathematical reasoning

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks equations to analyze the effect of a collimated lens on Gaussian beam propagation, indicating an interest in practical application using MATLAB.
  • Another participant questions the terminology used, asking for clarification on what is meant by "collimated lens" and suggesting that the inquiry may relate to how a collimated Gaussian beam behaves after passing through a lens.
  • A participant mentions that the focus of the discussion is on how the collimated lens affects the Gaussian beam waist and intensity, noting that the beam is considered to propagate to infinity.
  • There is a suggestion that the language may be causing confusion regarding the nature of the lens's effect, with a clarification that the lens may be collimating or expanding the beam rather than simply making it parallel.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants appear to have differing interpretations of the terminology and the specific effects being inquired about, indicating that the discussion remains unresolved with multiple competing views on the nature of the lens and its impact on the Gaussian beam.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations in the clarity of terms used, such as "collimated lens," and the assumptions regarding the behavior of the beam as it propagates. The discussion does not resolve these ambiguities.

Hello everyone,

I am trying to find effect of collimated lens on gaussian beam propagation. Do you know how to solve that? I need any equations ,then going to use them via matlab.

Thanks

Hello Ezgie, :welcome:

I know about a collimator or a collimating lens to get a collimated beam (nice word for parallel beam), but what is a collimated lens ? Could you elaborate a bit on what it is you want to calculate ?

Hello BvU,

Thanks for interesting.I am trying to find how collimated lens does affect on gauss beam waist? I mean also intensity. P.S: beam goes to infinity so f is infinity.

It's a problem with the language. If I understand her correctly, she probably wants to ask how a collimated Gaussian beam is affected after passing through a lens.

Yes but l need any equations.

Probably, but Ezgie has to tell us (she looks different alll of a sudden ?) , hence my post #2.

It is collimating/expanding not parallel.
