Electric Currents in Planetary Magnetic Fields

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the generation of magnetic fields in planets, specifically how electric currents contribute to these fields. It is suggested that these currents are produced within the planets, particularly in gas giants like Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, where high temperatures may ionize gas. The role of ionized gas in creating magnetic fields is compared to the Sun's magnetic field, which is also due to ionized gas. Participants seek references to better understand the origins of these electric currents. Overall, the conversation highlights the connection between planetary magnetic fields and internal electric currents generated by ionized gases.

The magnetic fields of several planets in our solar system are from what I've read caused by electric currents - does anyone know what the electric currents are caused by?

maybe some references would be good for us(me) what you are looking for.

I think the current is generated inside the planet.

What I found in a book on our solar system was that Jupiter and the other gas giants were believed to have their magnetic fields caused by electric currents inside the planet. What I was specifically looking for was the cause of these electric currents.

ionized gas? The Sun has magnetic field due to its ionized gas. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune might have high enough temperatures in their centra to have their gas inoized.

Is a homemade radio telescope realistic? There seems to be a confluence of multiple technologies that makes the situation better than when I was a wee lad: software-defined radio (SDR), the easy availability of satellite dishes, surveillance drives, and fast CPUs. Let's take a step back - it is trivial to see the sun in radio. An old analog TV, a set of "rabbit ears" antenna, and you're good to go. Point the antenna at the sun (i.e. the ears are perpendicular to it) and there is...

Your posts, clips and photos may by all means include scientific information; that does not make it less beautiful to me (n.b. the posts must of course comply with the PF guidelines, i.e. regarding science, only mainstream science is allowed, fringe/pseudoscience is not allowed). n.b. How does light maintain enough energy in the visible part of the spectrum for the naked eye to see in the night sky. Also, how did it start of in the visible frequency part of the spectrum. Was it, for example, photons being ejected at that frequency after high energy particle interaction. Or does the light become visible (spectrum) after hitting our atmosphere or space dust or something? EDIT: Actually I just thought. Maybe the EM starts off as very high energy (outside the visible...
