Electric Field Question Involving Springs and SHM

AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around a physics problem involving a charged block connected to a spring in a uniform electric field. Participants are addressing how to determine the maximum expansion of the spring, the equilibrium position of the block, and whether the motion is simple harmonic, including the calculation of its period. Key equations discussed include the electric force (F = Eq) and the spring force (F = kx), with attempts to relate these forces to find the displacement. The conversation also touches on the effects of kinetic friction on the system's behavior. Overall, the thread seeks guidance on solving these interconnected physics concepts.

Homework Statement

A block having mass m and charge + Q is connected to a spring having constant k. The block lies on a frictionless horizontal track, and the system is immersed in a uniform electric field of magnitude E, directed as shown in Figure P25.11. If the block is released from rest when the spring is unstretched (at x = 0),

(a) By what maximum amount does the spring expand?
(b) What is the equilibrium position of the block?
(c) Show that the block’s motion is simple harmonic, and determine its period.
(d) Repeat part (a) if the coefficient of kinetic friction between block and surface is μk.

Homework Equations

F(electric) = Eq
F(spring) = kx

The Attempt at a Solution

a) Drew a FBD and saw that Fs = Fe, so kx = Eq, therefore x = Eq/k
is that as far as i can go or can I solve this to find numbers?

b) the equilibrium position of the block would be the blocks initial position plus the change in x of the spring

c) i am really not sure how to solve this, if you could lead me in the right direction that would be nice

d) Fs + fk = Fe, so kx + μmg = Eq, therefore x = (Eq - μmg) / k

does anyone have any idea on how to solve this electric force problem that involves a spring?

Kindly see the attached pdf. My attempt to solve it, is in it. I'm wondering if my solution is right. My idea is this: At any point of time, the ball may be assumed to be at an incline which is at an angle of θ(kindly see both the pics in the pdf file). The value of θ will continuously change and so will the value of friction. I'm not able to figure out, why my solution is wrong, if it is wrong .
TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
Thread 'Correct statement about a reservoir with outlet pipe'
The answer to this question is statements (ii) and (iv) are correct. (i) This is FALSE because the speed of water in the tap is greater than speed at the water surface (ii) I don't even understand this statement. What does the "seal" part have to do with water flowing out? Won't the water still flow out through the tap until the tank is empty whether the reservoir is sealed or not? (iii) In my opinion, this statement would be correct. Increasing the gravitational potential energy of the...
