Experimental physics as a career

Hi, I have numerous questions concerning experimental physics..
If you want to be an experimental physicist what can you study? I would like to study particle physics and quantum mechanics.. are they well involved?
Also does anyone know if experimental physicists have a good income? what's the average salary? and what are your chances of getting employed?

Modern physics is all involves quantum mechanics to some degree. The closest to pure quantum mechanics is atomic/molecular/optical physics. As you guessed, it has a lot to do with optics. So how do you like optics?

Particle has little to do with atomic/molecular/optical. That's mostly programming and statistics from what I understand.
