Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the forces acting on a car's tyres when the vehicle is turning right. Participants explore the dynamics involved in this scenario, including the distribution of forces and the effects of torque on the tyres.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions which tyres experience more force during a right turn, specifically asking if it is the left-side or right-side tyres.
  • Another participant expresses uncertainty about the topic and seeks clarification.
  • A different participant suggests that the right-side tyres should experience more force but struggles to provide justification for this claim.
  • One participant introduces the concept of the car's center of mass and its relation to the torque acting on the tyres during a right turn.
  • A participant indicates difficulty in understanding the discussion and requests further explanation.
  • A later reply encourages the use of a free-body diagram to analyze the forces acting on the car, implying that visual representation may aid in understanding the problem.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not appear to reach a consensus on which tyres experience more force during a right turn, and multiple viewpoints and uncertainties remain present in the discussion.

Contextual Notes

Some participants express confusion regarding the concepts discussed, indicating potential limitations in understanding the forces and torque involved. The discussion lacks detailed mathematical analysis or definitive conclusions.

If a car is turning towards right, at which tyres more force will act i.e. left-side tyres or right-side tyres...??

Physics news on Phys.org
Which do you think?

I am not so clear about it...

I think it should be right-side but am not able to justify myself with reason...!

Assume the center of mass of the car is above where the tires contact the pavement, and that the car is accelerating to the right (it's turning to the right). What is the effect of the torque on the tires?

Couldn't understand...

Why don't you start by drawing a free-body diagram and show us what you know about all the forces acting on it?
