AI Thread Summary
The significance of the quantitative GRE score in admission decisions varies, but a score in the 76th percentile is generally considered acceptable. Most programs prioritize the subject GRE over the general GRE, and scores below the 80th percentile may raise concerns, especially since the test is not particularly challenging. Retaking the GRE shortly before application deadlines may not be advisable unless there is strong confidence in achieving a significantly better score, as it could be seen as a waste of time and resources.

I was just wondering how significant the quantitative gre score was in admission decisions. My score isn't awful (76th percentile) and my pgre is 850. Just curious.

They pretty much don't care about the general GRE at all as long as you get a reasonable score. Below 80th percentile might be considered low though since it is not a difficult test and you are competing with people in the humanities who may not have taken any math in college.

Would you recommend I take it again? Many of my grad school apps are due on Jan 15th, so I could squeeze in another attempt.

That seems like a waste of time and money, unless there is some reason to believe that you would do far better the second time around.

I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
