Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around guidance for an undergraduate physics student regarding future career planning after completing their degree. It explores potential academic paths, the relevance of additional degrees, and considerations for working in academia versus industry, with a focus on geographical preferences for further studies and employment.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Homework-related
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks for clarification on the student's degree level, specialty, work experience, and desired work location.
  • Another participant inquires about the student's year in their undergraduate program.
  • The student mentions they are in their 3rd year and currently developing skills in various areas such as data analysis, programming, and experimental physics.
  • The student expresses interest in pursuing a master's or PhD and seeks clarity on how the academic world operates.
  • Some participants suggest considering additional degrees in fields like Mechatronics or Electronics Engineering.
  • There is a discussion about the differences between working in academia and industry, with the student indicating a preference for academia.
  • One participant notes that career options will depend heavily on the specific country the student wishes to work in and asks about potential countries and language proficiency.
  • The student lists the USA, France, and Switzerland as potential countries for graduate studies and mentions they are learning English.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the importance of clarifying the student's academic and career goals, but multiple competing views remain regarding the best paths forward and the relevance of additional degrees.

Contextual Notes

The discussion lacks specific details about the academic programs available in the mentioned countries and does not resolve the student's uncertainty about family connections or the differences between academia and industry.

Hello, I am an undergraduate physics student, and I would like some guidance on 'what to do' once I finish my degree. Any suggestions?

That's a pretty broad question. Which degree? (BS, MS, PhD?) What specialty? What work or research experience do you have so far? What country do you want to work in? Do you want to work in industry or academia?

Have you discussed this with your faculty advisor at your university?

What year are you?

I am in my 3rd year of my undergraduate studies, currently finishing my 6th semester and about to start my 7th in physics.

For poins:
  • Currently, I am studying for my BS in Physics. Do you think it would be useful to pursue an additional degree, such as in Mechatronics or Electronics Engineering?
  • For now, I would like to have a clearer plan or perspective for after I finish my degree. I'm interested in possibly pursuing a master’s or PhD, but I'm curious about how the academic world works.
  • I'm still working on finding my specialty. Right now, I am developing my skills in areas offered by my program, such as data analysis, programming, experimental physics, theoretical physics, electronics, teaching, and social engagement.
  • I haven't decided on a country yet, but Europe would be my main goal.
  • I would like to work in academia, although I don’t know much about the industry yet. How different are they?

Career options will depend heavily on the specific country that you want to work in. Your profile has your country listed as Bolivia, but for now you plan to do graduate studies (or other additional studies) in a European country and then work in a European country. Is that correct? Do you have any family connections to any specific European country? Can you narrow down the list of potential countries to your top 3? What languages are you fluent, or at least proficient, in?

Sorry for the delay.
Here are my answers to the questions:
  • Yes, I am considering doing graduate studies.
  • I am not sure if I have family in other countries.
  • My top 3 countries might be the USA, France, and Switzerland.
  • I am learning English.
