The discussion revolves around a quote attributed to Carl Sagan, reflecting on the negative influences of media on children. The quote suggests that an extraterrestrial observer would conclude that humanity prioritizes teaching harmful values such as violence and consumerism through various forms of media. I'm not sure where to post this, it doesn't really fit anywhere. Anyway, I remember hearing a quote a while ago and I can't completely remember it or who said it. It said something along the lines of "If an extraterrestrial visited earth, they would see a world obesessed with television and fighting rather than science and knowledge... etc" - or something along those lines. It was a lot more elegant than that, though. I have a feeling it was Carl Sagan. Can anyone help me find it?

An extraterrestrial being, newly arrived on Earth - scrutinizing what we mainly present to our children in television, radio, movies, newspapers, magazines, the comics, and many books - might easily conclude that we are intent on teaching them murder, rape, cruelty, superstition, credulity, and consumerism. We keep at it, and through constant repetition many of them finally get it.

I don't know if he really said this, but this site thinks so:

Thank you so much, that's it!

Part of it was missing though, this is the full quote I remember:

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
