SUMMARY

The discussion centers on a physics problem involving a rocket launched with an upward acceleration of 19 m/s² for 30 seconds before the engine shuts off. The highest point reached by the rocket can be calculated using kinematic equations, yielding a maximum height of 8,550 meters. The total time the rocket is in the air is approximately 63.5 seconds, and the speed just before impact is calculated to be 34.3 m/s. Participants emphasize the importance of showing work for clarity and adherence to forum rules.

PREREQUISITES
  • Kinematic equations of motion
  • Understanding of free-fall physics
  • Basic algebra for solving equations
  • Concept of acceleration and its effects on motion
NEXT STEPS
  • Study kinematic equations for uniformly accelerated motion
  • Learn about free-fall dynamics and terminal velocity
  • Explore problem-solving techniques in physics
  • Review the principles of projectile motion
USEFUL FOR

Students studying physics, educators teaching motion concepts, and anyone interested in solving real-world problems involving acceleration and free-fall dynamics.

Help with a problem!

I've been trying to solve this and cannot seem to be getting the right answer.. please help!

A rocket is fired vertically with an upward acceleration of 19 m/s2. After 30 s, the engine shuts off and the rocket then continues rising (while in free-fall). The rocket eventually stops rising and then falls back to the ground.

a) What is the highest point the rocket reaches?
b) what is the total time the rocket is in the air?
c) what is the speed of the rocket just before it hits the ground?

Thanks!

You are going to have to show some work before we can help you. It's the rules. Also, please post homework problems in the homework help section in the future.
