Suggestion Hot Threads linking to closed thread

  • Thread starter Thread starter member 656954
  • Start date Start date
AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on whether the Hot Links generator should exclude locked threads, as these often contain content that violates forum rules. Participants express a preference for the "Related Threads" section, which includes dates and locked/unlocked symbols, indicating a different expectation compared to "Hot Threads." Concerns are raised about the quality of some hot threads, where low-quality posts can dominate discussions. The contrast between rapid, less thoughtful posting and slower, more meaningful contributions is highlighted. Overall, there is a call for adjustments to improve the relevance and quality of linked threads.

Just wondering whether the Hot Links generator shouldn't be configured to ignore locked out threads, as per the example from just now, because from what I've seen, being closed to new posts usually means the content has broken the PF rules.

I love peruseing those old threads! I'm talking about the "Related Threads" at the bottom.

I enjoy those as well, and because they have the date and locked / unlocked symbol, my expectation is different to a 'Hot Thread', which I expect to at least be able to participate in - assuming I'm able, there's a lot of posts where I've no idea what's being discussed 😄

In both Classical and Relativity, at least three of the five "hot" threads are really low quality. Someone refusing to learn and simply restating how wrong everyone else is, or iterating "...well what about <slightly modified scenario>?" can generate a lot of posts very quickly. Thoughtful posters tend to post more slowly because they think before they type.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
