SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the job prospects for individuals holding both a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering (ME) and a Master's degree in Industrial Engineering (IE) from Purdue University. The participant, who graduated from Tsinghua University and has relevant internships, seeks advice on the competitiveness of their background in the U.S. job market. Key insights include the importance of documenting work experience with Cummins Inc. and the need to strategically emphasize either Mechanical Engineering or Operations Research when applying for jobs.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Mechanical Engineering principles, particularly in solid mechanics.
  • Familiarity with Industrial Engineering concepts, especially operational research.
  • Knowledge of the U.S. job market for engineering graduates.
  • Experience with internship applications and networking in engineering fields.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the job market trends for Mechanical and Industrial Engineers in the U.S.
  • Learn about effective strategies for documenting and presenting work experience.
  • Explore networking opportunities with professionals in the engineering sectors.
  • Investigate the role of internships in enhancing employability for engineering graduates.
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for recent engineering graduates, career advisors, and anyone considering dual master's degrees in engineering fields, particularly those interested in the U.S. job market.

Hello everyone, first please accept my sincere greeting.

I finished my 4-year undergraduate study at the top 1 university of China (Tsinghua University) in 2012, majoring in Mechanical engineering (concentration is thermal and heat transfer). After that I came to Purdue University and got a master degree in mechanical engineering (solid mechanics direction) December 2014. Now I am considering using one more year (one fall + one spring) to get an IE (industrial engineering) master degree at Purdue (probably in operational research area) and then start my job career.

I have two internships (thermal and manufacturing related) in China and my master study in ME at Purdue is supported by Cummins Inc (I do not have internships at Cummins but really worked a lot with Cummins team in the previous 2 years). For my planned future study in IE major, I might not be able to get an internship because I start at fall semester and graduate in the coming spring semester (no summer).

Above are my basic background and plan. Would anyone give me some hint on whether this background is competitive or not in finding an engineering job in US? Is this background without IE internships a good plan (though I will have a BS degree in ME, a MS degree in ME and a MS degree in IE)?

I really appreciate all of you who can help me on mu puzzles! Thank you very much and have a nice day!

That should be a good background. It would be good to document your work with Cummins. You may have to decide if you want to emphasize your ME or your operations research interest with a potential employer, or find some common ground.
