Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around solving complex homework questions related to chromosome numbers, specifically focusing on the concepts of diploid and haploid cells. Participants explore definitions, examples, and specific homework questions that require understanding these concepts.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses confusion about how to solve specific homework questions regarding chromosome numbers, particularly questions 6 and 7.
  • Another participant asks for clarification on the difference between diploid and haploid cells and inquires which cells are haploid.
  • A response clarifies that diploid cells contain chromosomes in pairs, while haploid cells have single chromosomes, but it is uncertain if this is entirely correct.
  • Participants identify sperm and egg cells (ova) as examples of haploid cells.
  • One participant suggests treating the problem as a brain teaser, indicating that one of two cells (P or Q) from the same organism must be haploid, prompting further exploration of potential answers.
  • Another participant expresses that they have gained clarity on the topic after the discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the definitions of diploid and haploid cells, but there remains uncertainty regarding the specific homework questions and how to approach them. The discussion does not reach a consensus on the solutions to the homework questions.

Contextual Notes

Some participants indicate a lack of information in their textbooks regarding the relationship between chromosome numbers and specific body parts, which may limit their understanding of the homework questions.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be useful for students or parents seeking clarification on basic concepts of cell biology, particularly regarding chromosome numbers and the differences between diploid and haploid cells.

Please look at the pictured question below, I really have no idea how to solve the question. Thanks

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

there is no information about how the number of chromosomes related to the body part in my textbook so i have no idea for the question no.6

Actually i have no direction and idea at all about question no 6 and no 7

I hope someone would help THanks

What is the difference between diploid and haploid cell? And which cells are haploid?

Chromosomes exists in pairs. Diploid is the cell where chromosomes exists in pairs while Haploid is the cell where chromosomes exists as single. Am I right?

OK so far, now the second - which cells are haploid?

(Note: there are hints in the wording of the second problem).

sperm cell and egg cell (ovum) are haploid

but for the question 6 , i still not yet understand

i am actually not a student but it's for my kids, i learned some biology many years ago but not very sophisticated, please let me know the answers with explanation and i ll explain to she, Thanks

But that's enough, now treat it is a simple brain teaser. P & Q are cells from the same organism, one of them is haploid, so it has to be either sperm or ovum - which answers fit?

oh oh oh oh

i am clear and i know what's happening now.

thanks
