Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the construction of a power supply for a Helium-Neon (HeNe) laser, with participants sharing their experiences and seeking advice on building versus buying components. The scope includes practical advice, personal experiences, and considerations for high-voltage requirements.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses interest in building a HeNe laser power supply and seeks guidance on how to start.
  • Another participant suggests using a neon sign transformer, sharing their own experience of using a 9kV transformer during their high school years.
  • A participant questions the value of simply buying a power supply, emphasizing a desire to understand the construction process better.
  • Another participant cautions against building a high-voltage power supply, suggesting that using a transformer does not preclude learning about laser construction.
  • Personal anecdotes are shared regarding the use and experimentation with homemade lasers.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on whether to build or buy a power supply, with some advocating for building to enhance learning, while others highlight the risks and complexities involved in constructing high-voltage systems. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best approach to take.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention the importance of understanding the components and processes involved in laser construction, but there are no detailed technical specifications or safety considerations provided. The discussion reflects varying levels of experience and comfort with high-voltage electronics.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in DIY electronics, high school students exploring laser technology, and hobbyists looking to understand the construction of laser systems may find this discussion relevant.

I am a senior in high school and I am interested in learning about lasers. After a lot of reading I have decided to start with building a HeNe laser as it seems to be the simplest/cheapest to start. I purchased a laser tube ( http://www.lasers.shopeio.com/inventory/details.asp?id=653&cat=Lasers&sub= ) and now I need to build a power supply. I was wondering if anyone could help me with that? Thanks .

You can use a neon sign transformer. I did it with a 9kV transformer when I was in high school. Check out this http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/lasercon.htm" .

Instead of buying a power supply I think I would prefer to build one, however, I don't know where to begin. Can you help with that?

Otherwise, I feel as though I am just buying a tube, buying a supply, plugging one into the other and it's done. What did you DO with your laser?

I wouldn't want to build a power supply capable of producing the high voltage required to fire the HeNe. Buying a transformer (or maybe finding one in the trash as I did) would not mean you would not learn about laser construction. There is more to building one than just buying a tube and transformer. Did you read the link I posted?

As to the one I made; I played with it for a while before moving on to other projects.

Regards
