In summary, molasses can be used to remove rust due to the presence of oxalate-ethanedioate, which is a type of acid that is commonly used for rust removal. However, this process can be slow and the effectiveness may vary. Some people claim that molasses is an effective rust remover, while others argue that it is not as effective as other methods. Ultimately, further research and experimentation is needed to determine the true efficacy of using molasses for rust removal.

Are you mis-remembering cola sodas with extremely low pH ~2?
If you google "molasses and rust", you'll find a minor cottage industry of people promoting molasses to remove rust.

I haven't researched how effective this process is, but it is very slow, taking anywhere from several days to several weeks, depending on how much rust needs to be removed.

The chemicals listed in molasses include oxalate - ethanedioate. Oxalic acid is used to remove rust.

How else would one measure efficacy of a process? The internet, particularly as represented by G00gle, is like Alice's Restaurant, where you can get anything you want, 'ceptin' Alice - and the truth.

1. How does molasses remove rust?

Molasses contains citric acid, which is a natural chelating agent that breaks down iron oxide (rust) and removes it from metal surfaces.

2. Is molasses an effective rust remover?

Yes, molasses has been proven to be an effective rust remover, especially for small or stubborn rust spots.

3. How do I use molasses to remove rust?

Mix equal parts of molasses and warm water, and then apply the mixture to the rusted area. Let it sit for 24-48 hours, and then scrub the area with a stiff brush. Rinse with water and repeat if necessary.

4. Can I use any type of molasses?

Ideally, you should use unsulfured molasses for rust removal as it is more acidic and has a higher concentration of citric acid. However, regular molasses can also be effective.

5. Are there any safety precautions when using molasses to remove rust?

While molasses is a natural and non-toxic solution, it is still important to wear gloves and eye protection when handling concentrated solutions. Also, be sure to dispose of the solution safely after use.
