How does the reflectivity of silicon change with current?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the relationship between the reflectivity of silicon and the current flowing through a silicon solar cell when exposed to radiation. Participants explore how the reflectivity may change as the current varies, particularly in the context of solar cell operation.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about how the reflectivity of silicon changes with current, noting the difference between when the solar cell is irradiated but not connected to a circuit versus when it is connected and current flows.
  • Another participant argues that reflectivity does not significantly change whether current is flowing or not, explaining that light generates electron-hole pairs which are collected at electrodes when connected, while they recombine and produce heat when not connected.
  • A different participant questions whether the absorption of light remains constant, given that energy is either absorbed or reflected in the solar cell.
  • One response confirms that absorption remains the same due to the short lifetime of the electron-hole pairs in silicon, contrasting this with other materials where longer lifetimes can lead to saturation of absorption.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the relationship between reflectivity and current. While one participant asserts that reflectivity does not change, another raises questions about absorption, indicating that the discussion remains unresolved regarding the specifics of reflectivity changes with current.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not clarify the assumptions regarding the conditions under which reflectivity and absorption are evaluated, nor does it address potential dependencies on specific experimental setups or definitions of reflectivity.

Hello I am trying to fabricate a Si reflecting solar cell.

When a Solar cell is exposed to radiation and connected to external circuit, the current will start to flow through the circuit. So I want to know how does the Reflectivity of silicon change with the current( or conductance).[ Initially when solar cell is irradiated but not connected to circuit, the current is zero. when connected to external circuit, current rises. So how does the reflectivity change with change in current]

If the question is not clear please let me know

Thank you in advance for your help.

Reflectivity does not really change a lot whether the current is flowing or not. Light produces electron-hole pairs in the silicon. When the cell is connected there are collected at opposite electrodes and thus generates a current.

When the cell is not connected no current flows so eventually an electric field builds up that stops the electrons and holes from being collected at the electrodes. Instead they just recombine within the silicon, producing heat.

All this has very little to do with the reflectivity, therefore the reflectivity does not change.

I was thinking in this way,
Transmission through the back silvered black silvered solar cell is zero.
So Energy is either absorbed or reflected.
Does the absorption remain the same?

Thank you!

Yes, absorption remains the same due to the short life time of the electron hole pair.

In other materials with a very long life time you can saturate the absorption. This can happen in certain lasers
