SUMMARY

The calculation of BTU (British Thermal Unit) for hot water flowing through a 1-inch copper pipe, 1 foot in length, requires specific parameters. Key factors include the supply and return temperatures of the water, flow rate, pipe thickness, and the heat transfer coefficient of the pipe. For accurate BTU calculation, understanding the heat transfer properties is essential, as these directly influence the thermal energy transfer efficiency.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of BTU calculations
  • Knowledge of heat transfer properties
  • Familiarity with fluid dynamics and flow rate measurements
  • Basic principles of thermodynamics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research methods for calculating BTU using supply and return temperatures
  • Learn about the heat transfer coefficient for copper pipes
  • Explore fluid dynamics principles related to water flow in pipes
  • Investigate the impact of pipe thickness on heat transfer efficiency
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, HVAC professionals, and anyone involved in plumbing or thermal management systems will benefit from this discussion, particularly those focusing on heat transfer calculations in piping systems.

How can I calculate BTU value generated from 1 inch copper pipe with the length of 1 foot through which 176F hot water is passing?

It gets a little complicated. The best way is if you know the supply and return temp of the water and the flowrate. Then you can calculate it directly. Otherwise you need to calculate it from the heat transfer properties. You'll need water flowrate, pipe thickness, pipe heat transfer coefficient, airflow, etc.
