AI Thread Summary
Transferring between universities can significantly impact academic life, with many students sharing their experiences. Those who have transferred often report positive outcomes, particularly when moving to institutions with better research opportunities and higher rankings. A specific case mentioned involves a student contemplating a transfer from a large state school ranked around 60th in physics to one ranked 20th, highlighting the potential for improved academic and research prospects. Others have shared their own transfer experiences, including moving from a community college to a four-year university, indicating that such transitions can be necessary and beneficial depending on individual circumstances. Overall, the consensus leans towards the idea that transferring can lead to enhanced educational experiences and opportunities.

Hello! How many of you have transferred between universities at some point? If you have, was it a good decision? Have you found that switching schools has made a big (positive or negative) impact on your academic life? I'm thinking about transferring from a big state school ranked ~60th in physics to a big state school ranked ~20 in physics that would probably have better research opportunities for me. Anyway, your advice is appreciated! Thanks.

I transferred from a CC to a 4-year. Kind if necessary in my case.

I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
