AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the ethical implications and practicality of selling authorship of a scientific paper intended for publication in a moderately high impact factor journal. Participants express skepticism about the idea, emphasizing that selling a paper undermines the integrity of science and suggesting that recognition and authorship are more valuable than monetary compensation. Concerns are raised about the potential for misrepresentation and the negative impact on one's career, with recommendations to publish the work instead to gain grants and further scientific opportunities. The conversation also touches on the misconception that literary agents could assist in this context, clarifying that they do not handle scientific articles. The thread concludes with a warning against the unethical practice of passing off purchased work as one's own.

I'm about to sell a scientific paper (give authorship to another person), publishable to a moderately high impact factor journal. What would be the price range?

:-)

I'd love to read it. But I guess that would defeat the purpose of selling it.

If it we me, having my name on it would be payment enough.

Sell a scientific paper? That kind of defeats the purpose of science doesn't it?
And I kind of doubt that anybody will give you money for it. You should be honored to give it away for free...

Wow, selling authorship? That's some great scientific integrity there.

Instead of selling a paper, you should publish it. Don't know why you would sell it, unless it was obviously untrue...

It brings bread to the table ..:confused:

Grants bring money to the table, especially if you're already published.

You would sell a paper to someone else?? Why! Especially if it's as good as you say. Publish it and you will get more money in grants and be able to do more science. Selling it won't help your career at all

Agreed. If it were quality work, attribution would be far more valuable than cash.

Have you talked to a literary agent? I think that is what they are called. I would think they could at least steer you in the right direction. Hey, selling for money does at times beat giving for recognition.

Literary agents do not handle scientific journal articles. In fact, many journals will charge the authors per-page fees, though there are some that waive those fees (Springer Group, for instance).

Also, I wouldn't want to be the "author" that buys such a paper and passes off the work as his own. That's just plain wrong.
