Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around calculating the speed of gears in RPM, specifically in the context of a vehicle's drivetrain. Participants explore the relationship between input and output shaft speeds, gear ratios, and other factors like tyre size.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks how to calculate gear speed in RPM given input shaft speed, output shaft speed, gear ratios, and tyre size.
  • Another participant seeks clarification on what is meant by 'gear speed' in RPM.
  • A different participant interprets 'gear speed' as the rotational speed of the gear itself, suggesting it spins at the same speed as the shafts.
  • One participant corrects their earlier terminology, indicating they meant engine speed instead of gear speed.
  • A participant assumes that the input shaft refers to the transmission input shaft and questions what is driving or controlling the speed of this shaft.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion contains multiple interpretations of the term 'gear speed,' and there is no consensus on the definitions or the calculations involved.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not fully defined key terms such as 'gear speed' and 'input shaft,' leading to potential ambiguity in the discussion.

Hi guys,

How would I go about calculating gear speed in rpm? If I know the input shaft speed, output shaft speed, gear ratios and tyre size.

Thanks.

What do you mean by 'gear speed' in rpm?

How fast the gear is spinning.

Well they'd be spinning at the same speed as the shafts.

Sorry I meant engine speed haha, don't know why I said gear speed.

By input shaft, I assume you mean transmission input shaft.

What is driving / controlling the speed of this shaft?
