SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on selecting the appropriate bearings for a custom rack and pinion setup, particularly when force is applied to the rack. Key recommendations include using Thompson rails or Del-Tron-type bearings for linear applications. For curved racks, Bishop-Wisecarver products are suggested, or alternatively, mounting the curved rack on a transverse axle shaft with simple bearings. These solutions ensure smooth operation and effective force transmission in custom designs.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of rack and pinion mechanics
  • Familiarity with linear bearing types, specifically Thompson and Del-Tron
  • Knowledge of curved rack design principles
  • Experience with axle shaft mounting techniques
NEXT STEPS
  • Research Thompson rail specifications and applications
  • Explore Del-Tron bearing options for linear motion
  • Investigate Bishop-Wisecarver products for curved rack solutions
  • Learn about axle shaft mounting methods for custom setups
USEFUL FOR

Mechanical engineers, product designers, and hobbyists involved in custom machinery design, particularly those focusing on rack and pinion systems.

Hey,
I'm wanting to create a custom Rack and pinion set up where force is applied to the rack, turning the pinions.
In order to do this what would be my best method of bearing? Can this be integrated into the design of the Rack itself?
Also if the rack were to be curved what would be the best method in this scenario?

Thanks
Matt

Many different types of linear bearings could be applied to the rack. Thompson rails, Del-Tron -type bearings, many others. For curved, my first thought would be something like Bishop-Wisecarver products. Or more simply, mount the curved rack on a transverse axle shaft suspended in simple bearings.
