Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around how to enter military research, specifically in fields like particle physics, plasma physics, or observational astronomy, after obtaining a master's degree in astrophysics. Participants explore the hiring practices of military research organizations and consider alternatives such as civilian labs.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant mentions having a master's in astrophysics with a focus on statistics and expresses interest in military research opportunities.
  • The same participant questions whether military research organizations primarily hire PhD candidates or if they also consider fresh master's graduates.
  • Another participant suggests following a link for more information, implying that there may be resources available for those interested in military research.
  • Two participants express confusion and concern regarding the appropriateness of the link provided, questioning its relevance and intentions.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Come June I will have my masters from a top uni in the field of astrophysics (though most of my thesis work was in statistics). I'm looking for jobs just about anywhere but I've heard good things about civilian military research.

How does one get into doing research in something like particle or plasma physics or even observational astronomy with the military? Do they only go for phds or do they hire fresh masters grads? Should I be looking at non-military labs instead (eg pacific northwest national lab)?

Why did you post a link to an Iranian site?

Either jokingly referring me to Iranian nuclear energy research, or trying to get me on a terror watch list somewhere.
