Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding a suitable controller for a 25kW DC brushless motor, specifically focusing on options for controlling the motor in various applications, including potential use in drones and testing scenarios.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant shares a link to a motor they purchased and requests recommendations for a compatible controller, noting the motor is sensorless with three cables.
  • Another participant suggests a link to a thread that may contain relevant information about controllers.
  • There is a question about the intended application of the motor, specifically whether it will be used in a drone or for other testing purposes, and whether feedback will be utilized for control.
  • One participant explains that the motor is typically a 3 phase synchronous AC motor and describes the function of the controller in supplying variable frequency from a DC power source.
  • Another participant clarifies that the motor is not for a drone but is intended for testing, indicating that any form of control would be acceptable.
  • A participant recalls seeing discussions in DIY drone videos regarding the selection of controllers, emphasizing the need for controllers to be small, light, and inexpensive for drone applications.
  • One participant provides links to potential Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) that could be suitable for the motor.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the intended application of the motor, with some suggesting it is for a drone while others clarify it is for testing. There is no consensus on the best controller, as various options and considerations are discussed.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved questions regarding the specific requirements for the controller based on the intended application and whether feedback control will be used. The discussion includes multiple perspectives on the type of controllers suitable for the motor.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be useful for individuals interested in motor control, particularly those working with brushless motors in applications such as drones or testing setups.

Engineering news on Phys.org
These are typically 3 phase synchronous AC motors. The controller supplies the three phase at variable frequency from DC power source. The motors are impressive.

The motor is for a drone? How many motors will you be using on it?

Are you going to use feedback from something else to control the motor? Or do you have some other application where you can run it open-loop?
The motor isn't for a drone. We just want to be able to run some tests with it. Any form of control would be good.
