Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the search for simulation software suitable for frequency planning in communication networks, specifically focusing on microwave link site planning. Participants explore various software options, their capabilities, and associated costs.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests suggestions for software that aids in frequency planning for communication networks.
  • Another participant asks clarifying questions regarding the type of planning, frequency band, modulation type, number of base stations, coverage area, and budget.
  • A participant specifies they are planning microwave link sites, indicating a frequency range of 3 GHz to 300 GHz and suggesting PSK modulation as appropriate.
  • One participant mentions having used Celplanner and Mentum Planet, noting their high cost (~$50K per license) but effectiveness for the task, while also mentioning EDX as a similar option.
  • Concerns are raised about using frequencies above 11 GHz due to potential rain fade issues.
  • Participants express gratitude for the information shared.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the high cost of effective tools for frequency planning, but there is no consensus on the best software option or the specific frequency limits due to rain fade concerns.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not fully defined the assumptions regarding the specific requirements for frequency planning, such as the exact modulation techniques or environmental factors influencing their choices.

Any suggestion or hints for any software that helps in Frequency Planning for Communication networks... please give links! thank you all.

What kind of planning are you doing? IM? Interference? Something else?
What is the frequency band for which you are planning?
What kind of modulation will the networks use?
How many base stations will you have and how many frequencies will you use between them?
Over how large an area will your network extend?
How much can you spend?

I am doing microwave link sites planning.
the frequency may be any frequency in the microwave band (3 GHz-300 GHz)
I think a modulation of PSK type will be appropriate.
the link is consisting of two base stations as a beginning.
and it extends to about 20 km.
