AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the concept of anthropomorphism in paleontology, particularly in relation to a model created by paleontologist Dr. Dale Russell, which depicts an evolved dinosaur resembling a humanoid. Participants express amusement and skepticism regarding the model, with one recalling an incident at a paleontology convention where a case was made for Stegosaurus as a biped by altering its image. The conversation critiques the tendency to view evolution as a linear progression towards human-like forms, suggesting that such perspectives may reflect biases in interpreting evolutionary processes. The mention of reptilian aliens adds a humorous element, highlighting the intersection of scientific discussion and popular culture. Overall, the thread explores the implications of anthropomorphism and the subjective interpretations of evolutionary theory within the scientific community.

This reminds me of the time someone tried to make a case for Stegosauruses being a "fast moving biped" at a paleontology convention by rotating a picture of one so it is in a verticle position...

This Russell guy is a respected Paleontologist who has modeled an evolved dinosaur. When I saw his model, I immediately thought of the reptilian alien stuff. Like I said...actually like I should have said, I post this only for your amusement.

Heh. I think Mr Russel is a little skewed by his belief that evolution is a long march towards something looking like mankind...

And just what's wrong with anthropomorphism?
I suppose you have a problem with ethnocentrism also!

Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
